Jerry Qin
Mechanical Engineer, Material Scientist
Hi, I'm Jerry Qin, a student at Northwestern University pursuing a dual-degree in Mechanical Engineering and Material Science.

My family are Chinese-American immigrants, and I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. The diverse cultures and industries around me cultivated my many interests and passions.

I love jet and rocket propulsion - the raw power, the sheer size, the deafening sound. I'm fascinated in materials, as they define what is possible in our world. I'm interested in robotics, from soft biomedical inventions to androids with special computer vision.

In my free time, I like to play saxophone, compete on badminton courts and by billiard tables, and explore nature.

Please feel free to reach out! I'd love to talk about engineering, music, or just about anything.

Engineering Experience
Cooling Fan Design and Optimization
During my 10 week summer 2023 internship at Milwaukee Tool, I designed and optimized a cooling fan that achieved a 2°C reduction in charge temperature as well as a 5% increase in fan efficiency compared to an off-of-the-shelf fan.
Molecular Dynamics Research
As a winner of the Northwestern Summer Research Grant Competition, I am independently researching high-performing composite materials with molecular dynamics simulation techniques.
Design Project - Stair Climber
As part of a design sequence for Northwestern Engineering, I designed, built, and tested a stair-climbing cart along with a team of 3. This included building and testing many prototypes before arriving at the final product.
Design Project - Assistive Golf Grip
For a partnership project with the Shirley Ryan Ability lab, a team of three and I design, build, and test an assistive golf grip for a patient with multiple finger amputations. I utilize a lot of solid modeling and 3D printing in prototyping.
Northwestern Solar Car Team
As the Chief Mechanical Engineer and Aerobody Subteam Lead, I am in charge of the mechanical integrity and progress of the team as well as a couple of projects involved with aerodynamics and cooling.
Jet Engine Modeling
As a CAD personal project, I designed a Jet Engine in Solidworks complete with a motion study animation and engineering drawings for the assembly
Systems and Computer Vision Intern - Anx Robotica
Known for their capsule endoscopy robots, the biomedical corporation Anx Robotica is trying to improve the image and video outputs from endoscopy. In this internship I use machine learning algorithms to improve image quality and definition.
Verlet Collision Simulator
As a personal project with 2 peers, the verlet collision simulator uses verlet integration techniques and tension and collision physics to simulate ball-rope interactions.
